I Think I Won

Authors Note: Look for my simile

“I just bought my first lottery ticket and I’m so excited!” Bill yelled. “Don’t yell we are in a library!” John shouted. “No yelling” The librarian said gesturing toward the no yelling sign. “I’m so excited”  Bill whispered. “I know so am I” John whispered. “How long do we wait until the drawing” Whispered Bill. “Two weeks” whispered John “WHAT!” Bill screamed at the top of his lungs. “Get out” The librarian yelled. “You better run like a cheetah if you want to escape my wrath” After that Bill and John stayed away from the library for the next week. Then when the day came to announced the lottery winner Bill and John finally came back but the librarians eyes were locked on them like a tick to skin. "The winner is ticket number 357170. Congratulations to our winner for this months lottery now come claim your prize." Said the mayor. "NO" Yelled Bill "It was one number off." "I WON" Screamed John "Yeah" Bill was so furious that he ripped his friends lottery ticket in half. "How could you do that?" asked John starting to cry. " I don't know" Said bill also starting to cry. Then Bill and John made up but, since Bill ripped the ticket someone else won. John was mad but wouldn't lose his best friend over some money.

Symbolism

1. Lottery - A great gathering

      In  the short story “The Lottery” the lottery is a great gathering. It is a special time of the year. This lottery you don’t win money if you get picked you get stoned. Don’t worry you don’t pay for your ticket. So you don’t want to get picked.

2. Sunny day - a nice day

- Sunny days represent a happy hopeful day in this book. Just like in most books, when it’s a sunny day people are out enjoying the day and chatting with each other. Almost like tailgating for  football, baseball, or  other sporting events.

3. rocks - represent death

- The large pile of rocks everyone tries to get away from represents death. The winner of the lottery gets chained to a wall or floor and people throw the rocks at that person. It’s very brutal but it’s one of the town’s oldest traditions.

4.black box - The town's history

- The “black box” that was mentioned resembles the town’s history. It’s a beat up box that has been there since the town’s first “lottery”. It’s something that means a lot to the people. Odd as the item may be, because usually you think black as evil and a box as boring, it standsout in the short story.

5.old man- represents town elder wisness.

- In the short story “The  Lottery” Old Man Warner represents the town elder. He is like a wise elder you hear about in books or see in movies. He makes confusing riddles that are suppose to help you unlock something or counsels you to make tough decisions.

6. flowers blooming- Happiness

- The blooming flowers represent a great happiness. Children pick them for their mothers. They decorate the town with a colorful joy.

7.school ending- freedom

- School is out and children are roaming freely. Freedom is what this would be for the children. They can laugh, play, and relax throughout the summer. It’s a very cheerful moment when the bell is heard on the last day of school. Even if the last day was terrible the minute school is out it

’s a new life.

8. June 27th- A holiday

-  June 27th is a greatly valued day. It is like a holiday. It was as important as Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and many more holidays. It is the day the lottery takes place. Everyone may not be excited about it but they know it has come and will happen.

Steak!

Authors Note: Look for the simile. 

I love steak and I also love orange juice. They go amazing with each other. If I could I would eat and drink that stuff every day. But if I had to choose one of them it would be steak. It’s the most juicy and delicious thing ever. If the world didn’t have steak I would cry like a baby with no bottle. Orange Juice is amazing but it's no match for steak. After football I always want steak. Once I ate two whole steaks. They were pork steaks my favorite. Since L.A. is the class right before lunch I'm always thinking about food. The first one that comes to mind is steak. It seems like every one was cooked by God himself they're that good. My mom makes them the best though. I feel as if I need steak to live. It's the best food ever there is nothing close to it in my mind. I couldn't survive a week without it.

Spring Assessment

Rocky Road

The land was growing darker in Middle Earth, the chances of getting the Great Ring to Mt. Doom splitting the Fellowship of The ring was split after a great battle. Boromir died fighting to save Merry and Pippin, though his efforts were in vain because Merry and Pippin were taken captive by the Uruk-Hai (The orcs of Saruman) who were tacking them to Isengard where Saruman rules. After Sam convinced Frodo to let him join on his quest Sam and Frodo set off to Mt. Doom in the land of Mordor where the dark lord Sauron rules, leaving Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli witch let them with a dire decision to make. Do they go after Merry and Pippin or follow Frodo and Sam? In The Two Towers part two of J.R.R Tolkien’s hit series Lord of the Rings the author explains to  the reader a great deal of what happened in the end of The Fellowship of the Ring before so the reader knows what’s happening and why they are where they are in there predicaments. People said Frodo couldn’t handle the ring why. J.R.R Tolkien teaches readers to rely on your friendships when in need, that the battle of good vs. evil never rests, and that with great perseverance you can do almost anything.

Good and evil play a great role in this book much like the movie version directed by Peter Jackson. In the book and movie Sauron of Mordor and his puppet Saruman of Isengard are the two primary enemies of the fellowship. Frodo and Sam made their own enemies along the way too like Sméagol (More formally known as Gollum) and the ring which is starting to tempt Frodo and make him weaker. Sméagol also helps Frodo and Sam get to Mordor after they captured him also in the movie. As this is happening evil is focusing more often than not on Aragorn and friends who decided to go after Merry and Pippin. On the way they got caught up helping Rohan. While protecting them on the way to Helms Deep (Rohan’s safe house) while on the way evil strike again and nearly take Aragorn’s life this is one of the few things that only happen in the movie. Afterwards a full scale attack by means of Saruman’s forces which blocked Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and all of Rohan in like the moon blocks the sun on the solstice, but like in most stories good prevailed champion and Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas lived also like the movie. Gimli almost dies though when one of the walls damaged by war collapses on top of him which worries the others deeply. The friendship between is strengthened by this near death experience

Friendship is what keeps Frodo and Sam going which is also the case with Merry and Pippin. Merry and Pippin’s friendship gives them the will to do anything. When they’re together they’re strong same as Frodo and Sam, Frodo relies on Sam’s friendship to get him through the painful times while he’s bearing the ring, Merry and Pippin on the other hand didn’t have to rely on each other as much for the reason of meting Treebeard the leader of the ents (Tree people). Treebeard mistook them for orcs so they used their knowing of each other to convince him otherwise. They only knew that because they are such good friends. Frodo had to rely on Sam to keep his cool because he was losing starting to lose his power of the ring. I think that Frodo had such a great grip over the ring for such a long time because of Sam willing him to keep going and to fight harder. Sam’s steadfastness to Frodo was great which is why I think Frodo made it so long with the ring tightening grip on Frodo’s spirit. That requires great perseverance by both Sam and Frodo.

All the characters in this story had to use perseverance at one point or another. In all the good books I’ve read and movies I’ve watched some character had to use perseverance. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas along with Rohan’s people defended Helms Deep with their lives and if it weren’t for their perseverance they wouldn’t have made through the night. Aragorn also had something almost no one else had. Hope. With the hope Gandalf would return on the morning of the fifth day still alive he fought. So he came Gandalf came and scared off all the orcs. Sam and Frodo were under a great pressure to get the ring to Mt. Doom before the war is lost and the dark times have come. There will and perseverance are what kept them moving through the dark lands even though all seemed dull there. Merry and Pippin had a hard time getting trough there time with the Uruk-Hai but with great determination they made through and destroyed Isengard. After which Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas came to Isengard only to find it in rubble for the perseverance of Merry and Pippin. This just proves that with perseverance and will you can do almost anything.

What do you think? Could Frodo have handled the ring all that time? I still believe he could have done it and he did. He defeated evil with the help of his friendship with Sam. He pushed and used all the will and perseverance he had to get the ring into Mordor. Now all he has to do is avoid the great eye and drop the ring in Mt. Doom. Not had right. Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas still have to fight Mordor’s armies and protect Gondor the last stronghold of middle earth, now with the help of Merry and Pippin of course.  The book was exciting to read and J.R.R Tolkien did a great job of keeping me reading and guessing the whole book. He showed the importance of friendship, perseverance and the battle of good and evil in a good book. I loved the book best I’ve read in a quite a while.

Drugs or Not

Authors Note: After reading this piece you wll have my opinion on Ryan Braun and the PED's.

NL MVP winner Ryan Braun after putting up great numbers 2011 the annual drug test suggested Braun was tacking PED’s (performing enhancing drug). After avoiding his 50 game suspensions Braun is getting jeers and cheers from fans everywhere.  There has never been a player in MLB history that has avoided suspension for PED’s after being caught. What do you think was Ryan Braun clean or was he the first player ever to get away with PED’s?

There is one main reason to me why you should support Ryan Braun in this epidemic. Braun’s stats are stable between the 2010 and 2011 seasons with a steady increase in them. The urine samples from Braun were being kept in the inspector’s basement which could’ve contaminated them. After researching I found the samples did not need to be kept there. There are also some reasons he could be guilty.

Braun was tested twice and tested positive both times that might mean he was on PED’s. The test have never been wrong before which makes it hard to believe he is innocent. Other great players like Barry Bonds couldn’t get away with it. He could've been on them his whole career though. That would mean he should've tested before and been caught then. Who do you side with.

I think Braun is innocent and so did most of Wisconsin. The Braun story was the biggest story of off-season. You need to think about it to understand what matters to Wisconsin is that he’s playing all season. Braun drugs or not he's still my favorite. What do you think is he innocent or guilty? I still believe he’s innocent.

Save the Animals

 Author's Note: I picked this book because it caught  my attention and sucked me in and I wanted to share that with you.

Man V.S Beast, by Robert Muchamore is about a 13 year old boy named James Adams who has been with a secret agency by the name of Cherub for almost 4 years. His mother died 4 years ago and a father is who unknown. His sister Lauren Adams is also a member of Cherub. Now on his sixth mission James along with his sister Lauren and best mate Kyle work together as they must stop an extreme animal rights group from killing Innocent people and millions of lab workers. Robert Muchamore did a great job at using realistic problems like animal cruelty and animal rights groups to tell his story.

Robert Muchamore makes Man V.S Beast a much better book by using real world issues like extreme animal rights groups. This book also brings out the facts. After researching I found the U.S abuse more than 241,000 rabbits alone in laboratories every year. Experimenters at the University of Utah cut deep incisions into rabbits' backs and surgically inserted implants into their spines. The surgically mutilated rabbits were observed for 24 weeks and then killed. Some animal rights groups break into facilities like the University of Utah and free animals. They also do this in places like slaughter houses or bigger named organizations.

In the book the animal cruelty is quite scary because they explain in great detail what they do to process animals.  When scientist breed dogs for testing they isolate them in tiny cages and only hose them out to clean them. Since puppies are playful when they have nothing or no one to play with they play with there poop and roll in their own urine. Which can make them ill before testing even starts. The test are usually testing safety of cleaning products in digestive systems. That’s why animal rights groups are here to stop it.

Animal rights groups are doing what they can to stop the testing. In places like the U.K., Belgium, and Netherlands testing has been shut down. Some animal rights groups will stop at nothing to shut down animal testing. The extreme animal rights group in the book is the A.F.A (Animal Freedom Army). They used napalm to blow up an entire parking lot of researchers cars. Even though most animal right groups wont go that far they will break in to facilities and destroy equipment and research.

I’m siding with the animal rights groups because I think killing animals for research is wrong. The book is overall great. It truly uses a lot of realism and is truly a good laugh. You should think about what you eat and how they make animals into that because i can’t look at burgers the same way. It’s truly a great book and show great realism with the animal testing and rights groups.
